New Job Prep
Dear Career Counselor MaryAnn, I have accepted a new position, and I just gave notice at my current job. I will work for another two weeks and then start at my new job. It feels strange to have no conversation with my new boss between now and when I walk in the door on my first day. Should I maintain contact somehow or just leave my boss alone until my first day of work? Signed, New Job Dilemma
Dear NJD, This is a great question. Between nerves or not knowing what to say, most people end up not saying a word. I'm a fan of communication. Send a message to say, "I'm looking forward to starting on Monday and wanted to see if there is anything I should be thinking about or if you have any reading for me before then." Something like that shows a new employer they made a great choice. I find almost everyone wants to start a new position hitting the ground running and this will help put you right in the action. Quite possibly, he or she will have some information for you to review but more than likely, a response of "there's nothing special but looking forward to seeing you too" will be the response. If you met anyone else during the interview process, feel free and express a "looking forward to seeing you on Monday" email also. Enjoy the new position. Career Counselor MaryAnn. |
