Sending Thank You's
Dear Career Counselor MaryAnn, I'm looking for a new job. I've been on a bunch of interviews both on my own and through headhunters. How long should I wait before I make contact with everyone again? I'm nervous about calling too early because I don't want to come across too aggressive. And, I'm really not sure how to follow up..sometimes, I never hear back about an interview I've been on. Signed, Problems Saying Thank You
Dear Problems, This happens a lot. Interviewing is a lot like dating however, I don't believe there's a 3 day rule here. Actually, I don't believe there should be one in dating either but that's for a different columnist. Anyway, I'm a fan of a quick thank you note by email to the main interviewer the very next day or latest, 2 days...most interviews start with a couple or more people. I believe this is so important that you should walk into the interview with an understanding that you'll be writing a thank you and have the task of getting the interviewers name and title. Also, a thank you note applies to Human Resources and you might want to think about the recruiter also. The reason for the HR representative is because they could have the hiring managers ear and therefore make a 'favorite candidate' recommendation in case he/she is on the fence. The note should be in appreciation of the interview and the time they took. Plus, some informative points about your strengths relating to the position should be represented as well. After about a week, remember that companies can move slowly during an interview process - you really might not hear a thing, then it's time to call the hiring manager or HR representative and leave a terrific message. "Hi, this is Career Counselor MaryAnn, I just wanted to follow up regarding the interview and looking forward to the next step of the process." An upbeat and energetic message is always appreciated. The interview doesn't end with the face-to-face meeting - the thank you letter can add tremendous value to an already wonderful interview. Remember ASO... or, Always stay organized! Good Luck in your search, Career Counselor MaryAnn |
