Time for a Change
Dear Career Counselor Mary Ann, I’ve been at the same company for over 20 years now as a computer programmer and I’m not happy anymore. I’ve been thinking of creating a resume and applying to new firms. I’m nervous. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to interview and quite frankly, don’t know how. How should I approach this? ...Signed, Not happy where I am
Dear Not happy, The first step is to put this into steps. Organize yourself. The great thing is the amount of experience you’ve earned throughout a 20 year career, the interesting thing is you don’t have a resume. For those that have read my column before know I suggest writing a resume and spend a little time every 6 months updating that most important document. Since you don’t have one though, my good suggestion is to use a service. I believe there are a few on the jobhogs.net site but if not, Google some key words. Brilliance is a well written resume. Next step is figuring out what you appreciate about your current position and look for key issues you’re looking for in a next position. The sooner you realize the best parts and the so-called ‘career wounds’ you’re currently experiencing, the quicker you’ll be able to explain to others of what you’re looking for. Find some trusted recruiters and find some trusted contacts to talk to. Here’s the harder part…Interviewing! Don’t ever underestimate that process. I suggest possibly looking into a classroom situation. Career Counselor Mary Ann is sure you’re well mannered and won’t chew gum or fiddle your fingers or not look the interviewer directly in the eye but you probably will. Practice, Practice…it’s not easy and even the most well-prepared person swings at a curve ball thrown. Now go out and write yourself that resume. ...Career Counselor Mary Ann |
